It’s yet another story of a breastfeeding mother who is prevented from feeding her baby in the public space. This time it takes place in Nice, in a library. Diane Pico goes there every Wednesday with her daughters, Arya, 5, and Adelia, 10 months. While the older one was looking for books to borrow, the younger one began to get restless. In a video posted on Facebook, Diane Pico explains that she then decided to settle in the corner of the little ones. “She had trouble falling asleep, she was moaning, she was starting to fidget too much. I decided to breastfeed her. I’m going to put myself in the small corner reserved for children. There are small low seats, I sit there. I sit down, I had on a T-shirt: I take my breast out over it as I do almost every day”says this young 38-year-old mother from Nice.
The rules prohibit feeding babies
It was then that the librarian begged her to stop breastfeeding little Adelia, on the pretext that it would be forbidden. And to quote the rules of the establishment in which it is stipulated: “Babies are welcome in the network of the BMVR (municipal libraries with a regional vocation) but the daily activities related to hygiene and food for them cannot be practiced inside them”.
“It’s not like I gave my kids greasy, chocolate-laden cookies, which then soiled the books. I’m very respectful: my daughters always have clean hands when they touch the books. There, it was just an emergency, and in addition there was no one in the premises, except a friend and her children”, annoys the mother of the family. And if she assures that everything ended in peace, she is no less angry and wants to share her misadventure so that this type of situation does not happen again. “I hope I’ll be the last one this happens to in places like this anyway. Women have the right to breastfeed – or not – wherever they want“, she concluded.
