"A 30-day ITT for a baby": three very young children found in dramatic conditions at their uncle's

In Aube, the emergency services discovered three young children, including an 11-month-old baby, totally abandoned. The latter was found in an alcoholic coma and had to be quickly taken to the pediatric emergency room in Reims.

Terrible living conditions. Last October in Aube, an 11-month-old baby and two brothers, aged 4 and 5, were discovered by the emergency services in the apartment of their uncle. The latter had left the children on their own to go shopping. “The smallest is in a cozy, his two brothers are prostrate on the ground, one of them in the fetal position hugs his comforter against him”report our colleagues from Ouest France.

The baby, who had consumed alcohol, was found in a comatose state. Tests revealed that the child had a alcohol level 0.15 grams per liter of blood. Of the traces of cannabis were also found in his urine. “The baby’s condition was so worrying that he was sent to the pediatric emergency room in Reims. A 30-day ITT for a baby!”, said the deputy public prosecutor of Troyes during the trial. The baby’s brothers also showed signs of abuse.

Uncle sentenced to three years in prison

Their uncle had been given custody of his sister’s children at the beginning of October. It was he who warned the emergency services that his nephews were alone at home, after having caused a car accident while intoxicated. He finally appeared on November 18 before the Troyes court, for “negligence and deprivation of care”, indicates the regional daily L’Est Éclair. “We can’t count on Monsieur to understand. Nor on relatives, for that matter. It was time for these children to be placed”estimated the deputy prosecutor during the trial.

According to the children’s uncle, who suffers from addictions, it was the two older brothers who allegedly gave the baby alcohol. The man was finally sentenced to three years in prison, including nine months with a reinforced probationary sentence. He will also have to compensate his three nephews up to €1,500 for the youngest and €1,000 for each of the other two children. On his side, the mother, who had entrusted her children for three weeks to join a friend in Portugal, will appear in court in February 2023.
